XXL
magazine has been around since 1997, when it was first published. It mainly
focused on genres like Hip hop because at the time it was popular and had a
connection to the people. The age range of people who read this magazine is 25
to 29 because they grew up at the time this genre was in its element. The type
of readers that are dominating the magazines are mostly readers from a African American
ethnicity due to the fact that XXL artists who feature are mostly from this
ethnic group. The magazine is mainly male dominated as 78% are male readers,
which link with the amount of male hip hop artists in the industry to women.

contents page xxl
On the
contents page, the masthead of the magazine is still at the left side corner
however in a smaller version in order for readers to be aware that this page is
a part of XXL. It still continues to use their iconic colour and font of the
masthead as its recognised by many people. The first contents page has a
contrast image to the front cover as it gives a more up close yet higher view
of the artists face perhaps to relate it to a school picture as the theme is ‘freshman’.
The image has used up 3 quarters of the page and leaving the other quarter for
the information on the bottom. At the bottom of the page it has a subheading of
features and within that are mini subheadings which are not in formal English
and this gives of an urban vibe to the magazine. Before the mini subheadings
are the page number which are in bright red because it matches with the colour
scheme of the masthead, so the reader can’t possibly miss that as it draws attention
and it lets the reader know where to go instead of going through page to page.
distributon
XXL offers subscription to their readers which means that the consumers will get an updated magazine every time a new one comes out and when you subscribe you will get a discount on the overall price. They do this because so that the audience save time and money so they will be persuade in buying the subscription. There is an online version of the magazine however there is not all the contents there of the magazine because this will allows consumers not to buy the magazine. XXL is not a freemium magazine because you will have to pay for the magazine although there are many advertisement other magazine such NME are freemium magazine which they make money out of advertisement.
XXL has electronic band extension which is where magazines extend their online presence for example XXL has a variety amount of social media platforms which are Facebook, twitter and Instagram these methods are also ways to generate readers because there is more advertisement and teasers of what the new topics of the magazine is going to be also what types of artists there are which makes the audience more engaged and persuaded to buy it. XXL uses social media to generate some content because it is a music magazine they may use Instagram for specific information like whether the artist is in process of making an album and other music related things.
The distribution networks of XXL is where networks of the distributors manage the flow of the magazine copied and sent out to the newsstand and if they are not all sold in the newsstand then the retailer's return the all the unsold magazines to the distributor and this is an advantage for the retailer as there is no cost to them but a disadvantage for the publisher/ distributor. Moreover, the XXL website contains more things than there magazine such as celebrity news and other things such as facts about artists. The reason for this is because more young people are browsing on the internet rather than the reading magazine and this is for the youth as they are interested in celebrity news. XXL does not have an e-zine version magazine due to the fact that it is usually free and it would make XXL lose money instead of gaining although they are paid of advertisements. And also XXL magazine do not have an app which will be really good as the youths will use it more than their websites so it will bring more readers and viewers.

The image of the double page spread consists of the upcoming artists who have made it 'all the way up' within the music industry, hence being on top of a building, creating a birds eye view image. Also by the way they are standing and posing shows confidence and freedom of being able to release their music and that they are essentially untouchable. Also being in a rural area shows maybe it wasn't easy for them to be successful. The area that this image was taken and their pristine white outfits contrast because usually wearing all white isn't the norm unless you are going to church. This gives the reader that these artists are grounded and wont forget about their roots. The language in the magazine uses a pun of 'all the way up' as its from a popular song by French Montana known around the world. however he is not to be seen in the double page spread. It also uses informal language of the 'ALL THE WAY UP' to give the audience a more familiar and comfort reading. The colour scheme throughout the page is blue, black and majority white with a hint of pink and orange and it also has a bold cover line to really engage the audience into the issue and have it relate back to the front cover as these colours are similar. All of the artist are looking up at the camera which gives even more emphasis on the cover line and their facial expressions shows a happy young males achieving their goals.
